Hakai Energy Solutions is the largest solar energy company owned and operated in BC. Hakai Energy is headquartered in Cumberland, on the Unceded Traditional Territory of the K’omoks First Nation, with locations in Victoria and Nanaimo. Hakai Energy specializes in design build projects, producing innovative grid-tied and off-grid power systems.
Since 2011, the team at Hakai has worked across western Canada, bringing cost-efficient and reliable energy solutions to tough, hard-to-reach locations. We are an FSR-A ticketed general electrical contractor with deep design-build electrical experience, specializing in solar energy and storage integration. About the role:
Hakai Energy Solutions is looking for an electrical Engineer P. Eng (permanent full-time) to become part of our team of renewable energy professionals. This individual is self-motivated, energetic, personable, and excited to work as part of a fast-growing EPC company in the solar industry.
The Electrical Engineer will work alongside Hakai’s design team, and report to senior management. During the initial stages of employment, the engineer will be provided with opportunities to support and mentor an Engineer in Training along with existing design representatives and senior employees.
Key Competencies:
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Passion for solar energy, electrification, and the growing renewable energy industry in Canada.
- Demonstrated knowledge of design-build project lifecycle
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with project stakeholders on remote and in-person meetings including demonstrated experience in collaborative communication & conflict resolution.
- Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record. A company vehicle will be provided for all work-related activities.
- Must be adaptable, handling multiple projects, meeting design constraints, client objectives and project deadlines.
- Ability to work in person at one of our offices located in Victoria or Cumberland BC, with occasional travel in company vehicles for meetings with clients and site visits. This is not a remote position during the initial stages, and limited opportunity may exist following successful performance reviews.
- Computer and software proficiency including electrical design software, CAD programs, and Microsoft 365. Skills testing will take place during the interview stage.
- Clear demonstration of ability to work with a diverse team and client environment.
Preference given to applicants with:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering & Licensed Professional Engineer designation.
- Experience working for an EPC company or organization.
- Experience with designing and/or constructing renewable energy systems with solar photovoltaic and energy storage systems. The design of systems including wind, hydro and alternative energy sources is an asset.
- Strong understanding of current events, policies, and trends in electrification, renewable energy and solar in Canada.
- 5+ years’ experience in the electrical industry or construction/design-build industries.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Prepare and evaluate electrical drawings and project documentation, such as plans, electrical equipment lists, electrical load lists, single line diagrams, area classification drawings, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, panel schedules, equipment layouts, PLC control panel layouts,
- Review and approve technical drawings and equipment datasheets to meet application and regulatory requirements
- Preform power flow, short circuit, and protection coordination studies for grid connected and islanded power systems (for AC and DC circuits)
- Facilitate engineering documentation control
- Oversee in-house engineering and design, mentor colleagues and junior designers in electrical design
- Commercial grid tied PV system design, which includes component selection, system design, production modelling, formation of specifications, shop, and final drawing packages.
- Conduct engineering calculations related to (grounding, power distribution, protection coordination, arc flash calculation and low/medium voltage circuits)
- Review and sealing of designs by in-house personnel
- Oversee Quality Assurance/Quality Control process for electrical drawings and design
- Work with colleagues and clients, providing engineering guidance through project development
- Ensure adherence to all health and safety requirements and COR compliance for all work activities.
