December 6th Vigil
December 6 is the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre
On December 6, 1989, a 25-year old man walked through L’École Polytechnique de Montreal, armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a hunting knife. In less than 20 minutes, he shot and killed 14 women, wounded 10 other women as well as 4 men, before he turned the gun on himself. During what became known as the Montreal Massacre, the shooter made violent, gender-based statements and claimed that he was fighting feminism. In his suicide note, he blamed feminists for everything that had gone wrong in his life.
The Status of Women is hosting a Vigil on December 6th, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada, to remember the fourteen women who lost their lives in the massacre 30 years ago and all of the women and girls we have lost to violence since then.
Please join us at the Calvary Community Church (inside the church) on Friday, December 6th from 7 to 8 pm to remember those we have lost and to declare an end to gender-based violence.
We would like to thank NAPEG and PSAC North – NWT Regional Women’s Committee for sponsoring the vigil.
