National Professional Practice Exam

The National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE) confirms knowledge of professionalism, law and ethics. 14 engineering and geoscience self-regulatory organizations, including the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (NAPEG) use the NPPE as one of their requirements for licensure.

In order to become licensed through NAPEG to work in the North, you will have to successfully complete the NPPE. Below you will find answers to some common questions regarding the NPPE.

How do I register for the NPPE?

Registering for the NPPE is done through each provincial or territorial regulator. Registration for the exam is only available after you’ve submitted your application for professional status.

Once you’ve submitted your application to write to NAPEG, you will be contacted regarding completing the NPPE. The exam is offered five times during the year. You can find the current schedule here

Are there free practice NPPE questions?

NPPE offers a practice test site with up to 100 practice questions for a fee. You can sign up here. The exam itself has 110 multiple choice questions based on six subject areas.

There are other free study materials listed on the NPPE site.

How should I prepare for the NPPE?

It is strongly recommended that you download and read the most up-to-date NPPE Candidate’s Guide before registering for the exam. As well, you should review the NPPE Blueprint and study relevant resources.

Is the NPPE taken in person or online?

Since April 2020, the NPPE is now 100% remote proctoring via Meazure Learning. In-person test centres are an option for exceptional cases.

If you have any questions regarding taking the NPPE exam for NAPEG licensing, please contact us

Effective April 2024, “work computers and networks are unpermitted (due to firewalls, restrictions on installing the necessary software to take the exam, etc.) and it is mandatory to use a personal device and network. If you choose to use a work computer and network, you may be subject to an additional fee for a rebooking if your device is not able to download the exam program.”  See the NPPE Candidate’s Guide for further details.

What if I need accommodations?

An applicant requiring accommodation for the exam must contact NAPEG and provide supporting documentation ahead of the application deadline with their request. Accommodation can include extended testing time, additional break time, and assistive equipment, personnel or items.

How long will I have to wait for my NPPE results?

It takes approximately 3-4 weeks after the examination date for you to receive your NPPE results. You will receive your results prior to the next examination application deadline, should you have to repeat it.
