11 FUTURE NORTHERN ENGINEERS AND GEOSCIENTISTS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS BUILDING PATHWAYS INTO HIGH-DEMAND FIELDS
Yellowknife – The NAPEGG Education Foundation has awarded 11 scholarships to post-secondary students from the North who are enrolled in full-time engineering and geoscience programs at universities across Canada. The NAPEGG Education Foundation is a registered charity supported by donations from the public and members and licensees of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (NAPEG).
“Students in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut can face barriers when it comes to pursuing a career in engineering and geoscience, including the additional expense of leaving the territories to pursue their education,” says Paul Guy, P.Eng., FEC, President of the NAPEGG Education Foundation and NAPEG. “These scholarships are designed to help students overcome some of those hardships to achieve their career goals and, we hope, contribute to Northern communities after they graduate.”
Nearly half of the 2024 scholarship award recipients are women, a notable number in a field where underrepresented professionals often face unique challenges. In 2023, the percentage of newly licensed women engineers in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut steadily grew.
Since the Education Foundation was established in 2006 it has granted nearly $300,000 to 130 northern students. The organization actively engages students across all levels, from elementary to post-secondary, offering programs like a classroom speaker series, a territory-wide bridge-building competition, coding class opportunities and more. This past summer, it helped bring Camp Engies, a camp that engages girls in engineering careers, to the Northwest Territories for the first time.
“Our goal is to help build pathways for students in the North to pursue engineering and geoscience careers so they can reach their professional aspirations and fill many of the high-demand roles in the territories,” Guy explains. “These scholarships are one important way we support future leaders in these fields, providing them with the resources they need to continue their studies and ultimately strengthen the workforce in Northern communities.”
